Our Painting

Our Painting

There are a few qualities I get from my late grandfather, my Dat. I’m stubborn, I’m determined, and I also love to paint and create.

I was grateful to have received a lot of his painting equipment and as I was going through all of the paints, brushes, books, papers etc. I found a canvas that he had used to sketch an image on.

I took the time recently to finish the piece. My painting style is very different to how my Dat liked to paint. I don’t have the patience nor the focus to paint in fine detail like he did so my style is more simple and naïve. Whenever I paint I remember the things he said to me about colour, perspective, what brushes to use. So I always feel like he’s with me whenever I’m painting.

Painting this piece has been extra lovely and I have certainly felt a connection with him. I have signed the painting with both our initials because I feel like we created it together. And I hope that he’s proud that I’m spending doing so much time doing something we both loved so much. Although I know he’d probably like it if I actually washed my brushes more often.

I.
